Autotune Overkill

I know what you mean, it does get on my wick a little. I like it's use in an overtly obvious/experimental way. I've heard interesting things done with vocoders/autotune treatments on acoustic instruments and percussion.

As for live vocals, it's starts to get into the realms of "If it's a backing track, with autotuned vocals, should anyone be there at all really?"

I know what you mean about its use as a cool effect. I've personally used that way, for example: on an acoustic guitar lick, with the built in reverb, to give the lick a 'what the hell is that? It's cool.' kind of feeling.

But for vocals, I actually think it ought to be used sparsely. The way that people seem to view popular music these days, I'm not sure most care one way or the other if a performer is lip-synching, or is aided by backing tracks, or is being tuned live. You could put a hot robot up there, and if the tunes are earworms, you've got a hit!

The software is so good these days, it can be virtually undetectable. Do you think Feist is tuned up?
I agree, auto tune is an effect that is no different than pedals or distortion on a guitar. I guess the problem with auto tune is that the human voice carries a lot of emotion in notes that the program essentially "corrects." However, if it's just a pop song, who cares, turn up the auto tune and have fun with it. Personally, I like treating the effect as a guitar pedal that I can use to really fuck with the sound of my voice. I like using auto tune over beatles samples, ramones riffs and comes out sounding pretty fun:

hope you enjoy
Michael Buble' used it as a joke on Me and Mrs Jones I'm sure!? It sounds so crazy in one part of the track, it must be a joke!!!!

I would even go as far as to say... Jeff Lynne sounded more human through a Korg vocoder on ELO's material than that does!!!! And that's saying something... At least it was analog and warm sounding... Michael Buble' became a robot to the music industry as good as he is... Some producers manage to make it sound real though, even though we know it's there. A lot of U.K. pop music isn't even trying to hide it any more. It has become a feature.... A star attraction if you will....... The kids love it. Buying bad records at an alarming rate and in huge quantity. The writing isn't even good anymore. Please spare our delicate ears and think before hitting the record button. Even Leonna Lewis is being messed with and I thought she had a nice voice but, obviously in need of some silly producers idea of greatness. That's my complaining for today. Hope someone feels the same. Have a good day. Thanks, James.
